Peter Rowan’s career has spanned from Sea Train to Old & In the Way to numerous solo and ensemble projects with Don Edwards, David Grisman, Richard Greene and others. He is a soulful singer and a poignant songwriter. He began his professional career playing guitar, singing lead vocals and co-writing as a member of the Bluegrass Boys, led by the founding father of bluegrass, Bill Monroe. He embarked on a well-received solo career in the late ’70s, releasing such diverse and critically acclaimed albums as Dustbowl Children and Bluegrass Boy, as well as much-admired collaborations with ace Dobro player Jerry Douglas, Flaco Jimenez, and his brothers Christopher and Lorin Rowan.

Iconoclastic and innovative, Rowan has a long history of expanding the musical boundaries of his loyal fans. He is also a notable influence on the careers of other musicians via collaborations with new acts on the rise, as well as by presenting talented up-and-coming players in his road bands.

Big bugs not your idea of Labor Day fun? Or maybe they’re not enough to fill up the entire weekend. Some other options:

Market Square celebration El Mercado celebrates its 33rd anniversary with, not surprisingly, a three-day music and food blowout. The conjunto and Tejano music runs continuously on three stages from noon-10:45 p.m. Saturday-Sunday and until 8:30 p.m. Monday. Of course, there will be lots of food and beverage booths. Admission is free, free, free.

Labor Day Arts & Crafts Show The River Walk Extension between the Alamo Street Bridge and Rivercenter mall will be crammed with vendors selling the usual handmade jewelry, pottery and fine art starting at 11 a.m. Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday through Monday.

Live thoroughbred racing at Retama Park The ponies actually got a head start on the holiday weekend this year, as the thoroughbred meet began last week. Post times at the Selma track are at 6:45 Friday night, Saturday and Thursday. Stakes races begin Sept. 12. The meet runs through Nov. 7; go to www.retamapark.com.

Cinco de Guyos Barbecue Cook-Off Besides the barbecue (all you can eat, $15), this benefit for the KIPP Academy at the Pearl Brewery on Sunday features Two Tons of Steel (fresh off another summer of Two Ton Tuesdays in Gruene Hall) and children’s activities. It runs from 9 a.m.-midnight.

Road trips

Bandera The “Cowboy Capital of the World” is wall-to-wall with holiday weekend events and attractions, from antique chuck wagons to Dr. E.T. Bushrod’s Medicine Show. Saturday’s 11 a.m. parade will be preceded by a longhorn cattle drive down Main Street. The music lineup includes the Kings of Western Swing Concert Series at 3 p.m. Sunday. Boerne Labor Day weekend means its Kendall County Fair time Friday through Sunday at the fairgrounds on Texas 46 East. Kerrville Known as the junior edition of the Kerrville Folk Festival because it lasts three days instead of 18, the Wine & Music Festival combines a mix of acoustic music and eclectic sounds with Texas wines Friday through Sunday at Quiet Valley Ranch.

Luckenbach Maybe there won’t be 1,859 guitar pickers like two weeks ago, but the famous Hill Country hamlet will have music running almost nonstop Friday through Monday, starting with two pickers’ circles this afternoon. The lineup includes the all-female Swedish trio Baskery, which will play Saturday afternoon before heading over to Kerrville for a Wine & Music Fest gig that night. Mason Folks who miss the late, great Texas International Apple Festival in Medina now have another Hill Country option — the inaugural Mason County Apple Fest, which runs from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday on the courthouse lawn. Marking the 25th harvest season of Son Light Apple Orchard, the fest will have all manner of apple-related eats, plus the Miss Apple Blossom Style Show, a car show, a tractor show, the William Tell archery contest and an athletic event dubbed the Try-Apple-On (groan!). New Berlin Couldn’t make it to St. Louis Day in Castroville two weeks ago? The sausage prepared for this benefit for the fire department and Community Club has a sterling reputation, too. The Comfort Area Farmers’ Market is open on Saturdays (beginning April 4) at 7:30 a.m. until 12:00 Noon (or until sold out) in the Comfort Park.  They have seasonal vegetables, baked goods, fresh eggs, plants, herbs, jellies, preserves, homemade soap and crafts.

The Guadalupe River is dammed at Center Point providing a wonderful place for public swimming. It features a waterfall that flows even in drought.

Antiquers will find a fun place to stop on the main thoroughfare through the town of Center Point, FM 480, just across from the current post office location.

Continuing south on FM 480, you will pass the historic Center Point Cemetary where many Texas Rangers are buried. Continuing further on FM 480 is Verde Creek, one of the prettiest creeks in the Hill Country. It crosses FM 480 several times as you make your way to Camp Verde. Stringer: Luckenbach, Texas

In 1977, Waylon Jennings sang the praises of Luckenbach, Texas, where everybody is somebody. He extolled the virtues of small town rural life compared to hustle and bustle of materialistic urban society.

The community of Luckenbach, located in Gillespie County, was established in the 1840s by a group of German immigrant farmers that included Jacob and August Luckenbach. They had arrived in Texas in 1845, and located near Fredericksburg the following year. In 1852 the family became American citizens, and relocated 12 miles southeast of Fredericksburg to a location that became the townsite of their namesake community.

The Luckenbach family was active in civic and political affairs. Jacob served as county commissioner and school supervisor, and brother Wiliam was justice of the peace for many years. Sophie Engel, Jacob’s daughter-in-law,was named post mistress when the post office was established in 1854. In addition, she operated a store and saloon, and the town also boasted a cotton gin, a dance hall, and a blacksmith shop. The Lutherans and Methodists both constructed houses of worship, and there was a school for the town’s children. By 1904 the population totaled 492, but that number declined consistently through the early decades of the 20th century. From the 1920s through the 1950s the census reported a population of 20.

In 1971 the Luckenbach family sold the town to John Russell “Hondo” Crouch a former swimming champion and journalist from nearby Comfort, Texas. He installed one parking meter near the general store, and introduced a number of special festivals to promote his town. For example, there was the Mud Dobbers Day, a women’s-only chili cook-off, and the Luckenbach’ s Great World’s Fair.

Music was a central part of Luckenbach’s culture. Jerry Jeff Walker recorded his best selling album “Viva Terlingua” in Luckenbach, and the town was the site of Willie Nelson’s Fourth of July picnics from 1995 through 1999. The dance hall attracts professional and amateur musicians who enjoy the casual, laid back environment of the community. Texas Monthly named Luckenbachas one of the state’s top 25 treasures. The Texas Department of Transportation has virtually given up on trying to keep highway signs posted directing travelers to Luckenbach as souvenir hunters repeatedly steal them. But if you want to go to Luckenbach, Texas, and return to the basics of life where everybody is somebody, just head out on FM 1376 of Highway 290 near Fredericksburg.
